Creativity is one of the most distinct aspects of humans and animals. Taking inspiration from biology, the Creative AI Lab explores how to develop machines that can adapt, play, and create in an open-ended fashion. We combine approaches from computational evolution, deep learning, and crowdsourcing to investigate the potential and implications of more creative forms of AI in robotics, video games, design, and art. Our group tries to answer questions such as: can machine creatively solve problems to deal with unknown environments? Can we create machines that learn from and work together with humans to solve tasks that neither humans nor machines can solve by themselves? Ultimately, we seek to advance AI by incorporating insights from biology and, in turn, understanding aspects of natural intelligence through our computational models.
